History of Hotel Okura

Founded on the principle that our hotels must consistently offer the best accommodation, the best cuisine, and the best service, Okura Hotels & Resorts started out as a group of seven hotels. In the years that followed, the group has gradually expanded.


December 1958 Established Taisei Kanko Co., Ltd., the predecessor of Hotel Okura Co., Ltd.(Capital: 1 billion yen)
May 1962 Opened Hotel Okura
March 1966 Opened Hotel Okura Restaurant(Nagoya)
December 1970 Increased capital to 3 billion yen
September 1971 Opened Hotel Okura Amsterdam
July 1973 Established Hotel Okura Enterprise
December 1973 Opened Annex to Hotel Okura
April 1977 Opened Hotel Kajima no Mori
September 1978 Established Hotel Okura Chain, the predecessor of Okura Hotels & Resorts
March 1979 Opened Hotel Shilla(currently The Shilla Seoul (Alliance Hotel))
January 1987 Company name changed to Hotel Okura Co., Ltd.
June 1989 Opened Hotel Okura Kobe
March 1990 Opened Garden Hotel Shanghai(currently Okura Garden Hotel Shanghai)
July 1990 Opened The Shilla Jeju (Alliance Hotel)
October 1994 Opened Okura Act City Hotel Hamamatsu
February 1997 Opened Okura Akademia Park Hotel
January 1998 Name changed to Okura Hotels & Resorts
November 1998 Opened Forest Inn Showakan
March 1999 Opened Hotel Okura Fukuoka
April 1999 Reopened Aoyama Diamond Hall
April  2001 Okura Frontier Hotel Tsukuba renamed and started technical assistance contract
July 2001 Opened Hotel Okura Foods Factory
October 2001 Restructured the Group(spun-off Hotel Okura Tokyo Co., Ltd., a hotel operations company in Toranomon, Tokyo, with Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. becoming an operating holding company, which retained the assets of the Okura Group and currently manages hotel chain operations)
December 2001 – Opened Okura Chiba Hotel – Okura Frontier Hotel Ebina renamed and started management contract service
February 2002 – Hotel Okura Niigata renamed and started management contract service – Kyoto Hotel Okura renamed and started business cooperation
April 2002 – Established Hotel Okura Space Solutions Co., Ltd. – Hotel Okura Tokyo Bay renamed and started management contract service
June 2003 Opened Hotel Okura Sapporo
October 2006  Formed a joint marketing alliance with Banyan Tree Hotels & Resorts
March 2007 – Acquired Tsukuba Academic City Hotel Business Co., Ltd. – Established Aoi Investments Tsukuba, Co., Ltd.
September 2007 – Concluded an agreement with The Okura Prestige Taipei – Formed a joint marketing alliance with Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces
October 2007 – Hotel Okura Okayama renamed and started management contract service – Opened Salon Culinaire Okura in Hotel Okura Kobe
December 2007 Concluded an agreement with Hotel Okura Macau
June 2008 Established Orange Marketing Services, Japan Co., Ltd.
February 2009 The Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu enters into reservations and marketing representation agreement with OHR
September 2010 Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. acquires majority shares of JAL Hotels Co., Ltd. (Consolidated Companies of Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. since October 2010)
November 2010 Kazusa Academia Park Co., Ltd. has become consolidated company
April 2011 The Makena Beach & Golf Resort in Maui enters into reservations and marketing representation agreement with OHR
May 2011 Opened Hotel Okura Macau
April 2012 Opened Hotel Okura JR Huis Ten Bosch
May 2012 Opened The Okura Prestige Bangkok
Aug 2012 Opened The Okura Prestige Taipei
April 2013 On April 1st, 2013, Hotel Okura Co., Ltd. will launch One Harmony, a loyalty program for its three hotel groups, Okura Hotels & Resorts, Nikko Hotels International and Hotel JAL City.
April 2015 Hotel Shiroyama Kagoshima enters into reservations and marketing representation agreement with OHR
